We are excited to announce that Sydney’s first multi-storey school development Our Lady of the Assumption received the Excellence in Timber Design Award in the Public Building category.
Committed to cutting-edge materials and technologies, the design team used timber throughout internal spaces extensively both as finish and structure. The additions to the school feature glulam, cross-laminated timber walls and an exposed cross-laminated timber acoustic ceiling flooring system.
The judges noted “the well-executed design, the use of materials to provide wellness to the occupants and the incorporation of energy efficiencies features. They congratulated the team from BVN, TTW and timber installer Neue Holzbau AG for delivering this exceptional project.”
The close collaboration with BVN was paramount to deliver the school’s vision of creating spaces that invite imagination, innovation and support independent learning and student wellbeing. Congratulations to Robertus Pratikna and Sulan Mendis for this well-deserved recognition!
Celebrations continue other wins engineered by TTW. The high-tech CLT Seed House which picked up the overall winner of the 2019 Australian Timber Design Awards and the Residential Class 1 – New Buildings Excellence in Timber Design Award.
The judges commented “that it was a team effort, and made a note of the input from the structural engineers – TTW, builder – David Campbell Building and CLT supplier XLam. Judges also remarked on the use of the structural components as the finished surface, the custom-made glulam columns, CLT spiral stairs and the general attention to detail displayed throughout the building.” Congratulations James Fitzpatrick, Barry Young, and Michael King!
Engineered by Hung Nguyen and designed by Rod Pindar and Natalie Sciberras, the Brown Street House received the Excellence in Timber Design Award in the Residential Alteration or Addition category.
The judges commented: “Working within the constraints of a confined inner-Sydney lot, the project sought to internalise and celebrate the architectural expression of the build, with all of the primary structural elements of the addition are made from finish-grade Beech LVL, conceived as finished components and are dramatically on display. Complementing the structure is the beautiful birch plywood used as joinery and ceiling panels, beech LVL flooring, as well as the charred Victorian Ash cladding.” They also looked at the way the entrant explained how the use of exposed timber framing resolved to be the outstanding feature of the house. Judges also gave praise to the owner builder and designer couple, for the well-executed design and construction.
Congratulations again on these well-deserved recognitions!
