    WINNERS

    Marrickville Library – Overall Winner and Public Buildings

    La Trobe University Student Accommodation – Multi Residential

    Wildlife Retreat Taronga Zoo – Australian Certified Timber

     

    Located in Sydney’s inner west, this heritage listed building was originally a hospital and now has been transformed to create this multi-award winning library.  As the judges said “It’s crafted inside and out with timber, which is used for its columns, façade, screening, internal walls, window/door frames, tiered seating, joinery, ceilings and furniture. The use of the timber creates a space which is welcoming, warm and homely, creating a building that the community enjoys and wants to occupy”. Our Timber Team is incredibly proud to be a part of a project that has an unprecedented use of timber, that resonates with our sustainability goals and provides for the community!

    Continuing our work with Taronga Zoo over the years, our ‘Wildlife Retreat at Taronga Zoo’ engineers undertook the structural design to allow exposed timber materials across the retreat, the central guest lodges being designed with composite glulam timber. The judges commenting “The project included high conservation values, sustainability and public access, all key components of our Sustainable Forest Management standards. The project provides valid PEFC Chain of Custody certificates for the timber used and featured several suppliers of certified timber supplying a combination of hardwood and softwood timbers (i.e. Warringah Timbers, Binderholtz-Group, Strongbuild, in addition to Australian Blackbutt cladding – however, no PEFC certificate was provided for this material).”

    Showcasing our Timber Team’s expansive skills in timber engineering, La Trobe University took home the win for best Multi Residential. The judges calling it “Beautifully detailed. Cross-laminated timber and glulam are carefully exposed in various interior spaces, acting both as structural and a final decorative finish”. Currently Victoria’s largest timber building, this student accommodation utilisers 3500 cubic meters of Cross Laminated and GluLam timber and will provide over 600 new beds and new student amenities, for the university’s growing Bundoora Campus.
