We are excited to announce another award for our Construction Engineering team and the works completed on Shell house.

In a ceremony held today at heritage-listed Dolton House in Pyrmont, Shell House was recognised with the National Trust (NSW) Heritage Award 2021 in the Conservation: Built Heritage category.

Located at Brookfield Place Sydney (formerly known as Wynyard Place), Shell House is a significant building constructed in 1937–1938. Originally designed as the headquarters of the Shell Oil Company.

At 65.5m total height above ground level, Shell House is also one of the tallest retained heritage façades in the world and certainly one of the most complex projects of its kind.

The form of this elegant building is enhanced by the conserved large clock tower and its original glazed terracotta-tile façade. The heritage fabric of the façade and 400t clock tower in the heart of the CBD has been retained and restored for future generations, allowing the preservation of the heritage structures and adaptive reuse to create.

Likewise, most of the structure has now been restored to office space as per its original use. The Menzies Bar and Shell House Sky Bar, run by the Point Group, will occupy the Margaret St and Pavilion tenancies.

The major restoration and re-invention of this renowned Sydney landmark would not have been possible without the initial pioneering concept and subsequent construction of the Shell House Temporary Retention Works completed by our team at TTW.

The project’s challenges encompassed design, construction, and heritage concerns within a live environment. In conjunction with advanced analysis techniques, creative engineering was employed to retain this complex heritage structure, which showcases the ingenuity of our team involved in its delivery.

Our permanent works design team had to consider the many constraints of the temporary work’s elements and resolve any staging and construction issues that occurred throughout the project.

Congratulations on another great award win for the entire team involved!
