The Sovereign Resort project comprises of the expansion of the existing Star Casino in Pyrmont, Sydney.
The major upgrade of The Star’s Sovereign VIP Gaming Room comprises three major phases all delivered during a live 24/7 casino environment. The expansion’s aim was to enhance the visitor experience by creating a new restaurant, bar and gaming areas, with the works including the addition of a new level on top of the existing live casino. These works made provision for the addition of future levels and resort facilities including restaurants and rooftop bar areas.
An early works phase relating to high-risk column strengthening and foundation upgrades across multiple levels of the casino required complex structural enabling works which included lengthening and strengthening of 143 columns over eight levels as well as 40 new columns throughout.
The new level required large column-free spaces with the grid arrangement typically matching the existing buildings 16.6 m x 16.6 m grid. Mezzanine plant rooms to the east, which service the new extension, are hung from 1900mm deep long span roof beams. Raised floors are provided throughout, with some areas doubling as plenums to allow for the redirection of the existing bus lane exhaust risers from the main gaming areas to the back of house and plant room areas. Water features, rooftop skylights and landscaped gardens are located throughout with planting depths up to 1m.
