St George Hospital Acute Services Building

St George Hospital Acute Services Building

Kogarah, NSW

The centrepiece of the major redevelopment for St George Hospital is the 8-storey Acute Services Building. Constructed over an existing building, the façade required lightweight metal-frame walls without the need for heavy structural steel members.

The building’s façade consists of insulated metal panels in front of a metal sheet air barrier (producing an airtight result rather than usual sarking), glazed aluminium windows and curtain walls. TTW’s façade engineers designed stud walls to form a strong back panel solution, hanging from the edge of the concrete, and collaborated with contractors to adopt common materials (metal sheets and studs) in a new and different application.

Built above the new Emergency Department on Gray Street, the Acute Services Building provides an intensive care department, high dependency unit, eight new operating theatres, 128 new inpatient beds, two cardiac catheter laboratories, sterilising department, and a rooftop helipad.
