The outfall drain will be retrofitted with one of Victoria's largest vortex style gross pollutant traps
The state-of-the-art redevelopment of the Mentone Life Saving Club includes the redesign of the beach access ramp, beach promenade and car park. The retaining walls adjacent to the lifesaving club will use timber crib wall technology to capture level changes through to the beach promenade. TTW is working closely with the architects and crib wall suppliers to design a bespoke solution that will complement the aesthetic of the building and surrounding vegetation.
The existing outfall drain adjacent to the lifesaving club, which discharges across the beach into the Port Phillip Bay, is to be upgraded. The outfall drain services the districts largest catchment, and requires an upgrade to suit the increased runoff from the urban catchment. The outfall drain will be retrofitted with one of Victoria's largest vortex style gross pollutant traps, which will effectively separate and capture gross pollutants, sediments, silt, total suspended solids, some nutrients, oil and grease. This will significantly improve the quality of the water discharge around the bay. At the beachfront, the new drain will connect to an exposed box culvert that will act as the outfall and viewing platform for beachgoers. The culvert is a bespoke design between our civil and structural teams that is suited to the coastal conditions and storm/tide events. This structure has allowed for the historic sand scour levels to reduce the groyne effect.
The ramps and stairs have been designed to allow for season sand movement and still maintain the beach access.
