Continuing our long standing relationship with Macquarie University, the new Law School will cover an impressive 8,600sqm for aspiring new students.

The New Michael Kirby Law School Building opening in 2024, which embodies a bold vision for a new world of legal education at Macquarie University.

TTW Structures was engaged to provide specialist engineering expertise for the construction of the Macquarie University Law School building, a new state-of-the-art facility located in their Ryde campus, in Sydney, Australia. The project involved the partial demolition of an existing concrete structure, with a new mass timber and concrete structure being built on top of the remaining structure and foundation.  TTW Structures was responsible for the overall structural design and documentation, which included the mass timber and concrete structure, which featured glulam beams and columns supporting cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels. The atrium of the building boasts longspan glulam beams, which were a feature of the project. Lateral stability was provided through the use of concrete cores, which were a key component of the project.

The Timber team at TTW Structures worked closely with the architects and other stakeholders to ensure that the design of the concrete cores was integrated seamlessly into the building's overall aesthetic and functionality.  Throughout the project, TTW Structures utilised advanced digital engineering techniques to ensure the structural integrity of the building while maintaining a focus on efficiency, cost effectiveness and minimising impact on the existing structural elements. The team conducted detailed analysis and design work to ensure that the glulam and CLT components of the structure were optimised for their intended use and that the steel roof was designed to withstand the required loading while minimizing materials and construction time.  Our engineers worked closely with the project team to deliver a successful outcome, providing solutions that were both practical and innovative. The Macquarie University Law School building is a testament to the effectiveness of mass timber and concrete construction, and TTW Structures is proud to have contributed to its design and construction.
