Byron Shire Central Hospital
Byron Bay, NSW
TTW’s experience with large hospital projects was key in managing the complexities and demands of the new Byron Bay hospital. The project called for the delivery of a new regional facility that would replace and centralise existing hospitals, with flexibility for potential modifications and future expansion.
Challenges and concerns included a large building footprint over reactive soils, an accelerated construction program, high wind environment, and the associated roadworks required. Engineering solutions involved screw-piled foundations with void formers beneath the slab on ground, and utilisation of a fine-tuned steel portal frame design that is fast to erect. Road development – including a new roundabout and access from busy Ewingsdale Road – commenced prior to the finalisation of the building footprint, requiring careful design consideration and a staged approach to construction.
Connecting to the existing ambulance station, the new complex features three buildings ranging from 1-3 storeys, with an origami-like roof form and natural timber showcased throughout. It is now a central facility that provides a range of health services for the community and large number of visitors.
