The scope for the Ballarto Road project was to redevelop the current intersection as a large-scale dual carriageway roundabout. Ballarto Road, a municipal road, intersects with the South Gippsland Freeway a Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) carriageway.
TTW acted as principal consultant on Ballarto Road and South Gippsland Freeway Roundabout Intersection. The project was postponed for four years. Over that period, multiple services associated with local development, including NBN, high voltage and water, were constructed through the intersection without considering the future roundabout works. Given the shallow nature of the drainage network and existing service conflicts, significant challenges were encountered during the construction phase. TTW worked closely with the council to redesign the project to ensure the program objectives were met and costs associated with service relocations were avoided.
The intersection is in the natural habitat of the Southeastern Brown Bandicoot, an endangered species. TTW worked with ecologists to develop a subterranean culvert crossing for the animals. The bespoke design had to ensure adequate ventilation, and the culvert was protected from incoming runoff.
