Structural Engineering Expertise to the First Hyundai Car Factory in Southeast Asia

The state-of-the-art manufacturing plant will be located on a 77.6-hectare site in the city of Deltamas, an integrated industrial, commercial and residential district on the eastern outskirts of Jakarta. The development consists of 5 main production buildings and other ancillary buildings. The facility will start production in late 2021, with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles and a plan to grow that to 250,000 vehicles per year.

The main factory structures are engineered with reinforced concrete cantilevered seismic columns, and multistorey structures (up to 3 storeys) are reinforced concrete-steel composite special moment frame systems. The RC cantilever system & RC-Steel composite special moment frames are not common in Indonesia and required much innovative detailing to suit the steel fabricator capabilities. The soil conditions include poor compaction and shrink/swell soils which required improvement, with piling to some areas. The project is fast-tracked and documentation was substantially completed 4 months after commencement.
