Gosford Hospital is undergoing a major redevelopment designed to meet the needs of a growing Central Coast community. Having worked with these clients previously, TTW was called upon to provide its engineering expertise for the delivery of a functional, fit-for-purpose, easily constructed building that meets the requirements of NSW Health Infrastructure guidelines.
Currently under construction, the development consists of an 11 storey new building on a sloping site, with a new 3 storey frontage to the main entry of the existing hospital. It also involves extensive refurbishment of the existing building to reconfigure and update the internal layout to integrate with the new building. Adding to the complexity of the build, construction must occur around facilities – including a busy emergency department – that are remaining functional throughout the works. This necessitated a phased approach to suit both construction sequence and hospital occupation. The use of hybrid concrete and steel structural frame has allowed for construction over the existing building, and insertion of an additional floor after the building façade was wind and weather tight.
The masterplan also factors in transport options being accessible from Gosford Railway station and a multi-storey car park on site.
The development is due for completion in 2019, and will deliver a range of new and upgraded facilities, enable new treatment models, and enhance the future capacity for high quality patient care for the region.
