World class inter-modal public transport interchange
Chatswood Interchange is a world class inter-modal public transport interchange providing convenient and efficient public transport access, quality open spaces, improved urban amenity and well developed buildings of high architectural and construction quality. The Interchange facility is a critical component of the underground passenger line connecting Epping and Chatswood, providing frequent rail services to the expanding employment, education and retail precincts at Macquarie Park and North Ryde.
The new Interchange complements Chatswood’s town centre with a vibrant and active rail precinct including improved east-west connections, 10,000m2 of retail space and Metro Chatswood with 553 apartments in three towers. The site is approximately 350m in length from Albert Ave in the south to Help St in the north. The structure is divided into 3 zones by permanent movement joints – north zone, central zone and south zone.
In the north zone the track slab consists of a 1m thick post-tensioned slab, 120m in length. The western half was constructed top-down and the pair of tracks became operational prior to excavating beside and beneath this slab. Finite element models were prepared for all construction stages and these models were used to check stresses resulting from concrete shrinkage and the restraint from the supporting bored piers.
The central zone consists of three basement car park floors, the rail concourse level, track level, retail podium, landscaped roof and the Metro Chatswood residential towers ‘View’, ‘Spire’ and ‘Grand’. Innovative construction techniques were employed to enable two tracks to remain operational through 30 months of construction.
