Alex is a highly skilled structural engineer with over 15 years of experience working in both Australia and the UK. He is a timber engineering enthusiast and advocate and has a vast amount of experience in mass timber design including Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), and hybrid steel/timber structures, as well as innovative design long span trusses and steel and composite structures. Alex has successfully delivered over 12 mass timber buildings around the world and provided design advice and concepts for many more. Recently, Alex ran and delivered the Shell House project as part of the $1 billion Brookfield Place redevelopment and is currently delivering The Bond at Norwest – a mass timber structure with an estimated construction cost of $57 million. Alex is also leading the team that is delivering the mass timber elements of the Atlassian Sydney Headquarters.
Why did you get into Engineering?
I spent most of my childhood playing around with Lego bricks and coming up with some interesting designs - moving into doing this on a much larger scale as an adult was almost inevitable. The idea that I am contributing to the built environment and designing buildings that will be used by thousands of people for many, many years, excites me.
What is great about working at TTW?
I get to work on some very interesting and technically challenging projects on both large scale and small. I’m surrounded and supported by a team of excellent engineers and technicians that allows us as a company to deliver some truly amazing projects. In the mass timber sector, TTW has the largest portfolio of delivered, and ongoing projects in Australia. What excites you about the future in this industry?
The Australian construction industry is turning its focus towards using more sustainable design methods, safer construction practices, and an increase in the use of digital delivery of projects. Mass timber is sitting at the forefront of all these crucial elements, and I am looking forward to delivering on these for large scale timber projects well into the future.
