André is a talented senior engineer and a specialist in computational design and simulation. He is Technical Director of the Digital Engineering team – a team created to explore and develop advanced technologies and deliver innovative new solutions for complex designs.

    André is an enthusiastic advocate of cutting-edge technology and contributes to projects with advanced skills in structural optimisation, algorithmic design, daylight analysis and programming in modelling, analysing and solving complex, multi-disciplinary engineering problems.

    Tell us a bit about you:

    I have a somewhat unorthodox background. I was trained as a biomedical engineer and eventually specialised in bone biomechanics. My PhD studies investigated how bones optimise their shape to accommodate to their mechanical environment. My experience in the AEC industry and interest in computational design started in the Specialist Modelling Group at Foster+Partners, where I initiated a research project on spaceframe optimisation.

    Why did you become an engineer? What inspired you to become one?

    Engineers combine their creativity with science and technology to solve complex problems. I can’t think of any field more exciting than engineering and using engineering to make a difference and contribute to advancements in society.

    What is it about the industry that motivates you?

    We are witnessing a new wave of digital transformation in our industry, one that is making us rethink the way we work. At the same time, the market is pushing engineers to design bolder structures. This qualitative leap in technology is making that possible. Automation is enhancing our engineering and drafting, allowing us to do more, better, faster. Furthermore, we are developing technological platforms to establish new means of communication with architects and fabricators, expanding the way we collaborate and relate to other players in the industry.
