Archimedes Building, Wenona School
North Sydney, NSW
In 2015, TTW were commissioned to engineer a new extension to the Wenona Girls School, Miller Street campus in North Sydney. Working in conjunction with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer (TZG) architects the extension is to comprise a double height basement housing a 25m main pool and 15m long Learn To Swim Pool. The ground floor, accessible off Miller Street, features a partial glass floor allowing light to flow into the pools below while the 3 upper storeys house teaching and education facilities including landscape and swamp areas.
The quality of the connecting spaces, the desire to achieve head heights and the requirement to tie back into the existing building floor levels without the need for steps or ramps, required an innovative structural solution to be developed, driving the aesthetics of the building.
This included minimising intermediate floor depths by suspending post tensioned slabs from the long span post tensioned roof beams above the edge. Columns supporting the roof beams were then transferred over the pool to the site boundary by a series of tapering, long span, post tensioned portal frames.
