New community precinct showcases complex geometries and leverages water access
Functionality of design was a paramount consideration for this new community precinct in suburban Rhodes. The choice of structural steel as the basis for construction allowed for the optimum solution to address various site constraints; providing a method of building that was quick, simple and avoided excessive interruptions to the surrounding traffic and community.Addressing the requirement for multiple public entry points (including water frontage and two street entrances) the site consists of four interconnected buildings in a series of complicated geometries. The single storey structures fit within the landscape of existing high rise buildings, avoiding blocking any water views, and providing a transitional space between residential areas and waterfront. The complex also showcases interesting textures and types of Façade cladding, including timber screens, glazing, precast panels and planting zones.
The Connection was designed to be an interactive space to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community, and incorporates a community function centre, learning space, area for public exhibitions, restaurant facilities and conference services.
