Sydney Church of England Grammar School

North Sydney, NSW

When Cox Richardson architects won a design competition for a new project at Shore School in Sydney, they immediately came to TTW for structural and civil advice. Currently in its initial design phase, the new Physical Education Centre will demonstrate efficient and minimalist structural solutions, with focus on costs, buildability, and site restrictions paramount.

The 4-storey building will feature 35m spanning portal frames; 35m spanning floor to floor steel trusses; curved/vaulted roof profile with ETFE in places; and deep excavation within close proximity to existing structures and public areas, which are to remain in use throughout the construction.

This is a high profile endeavour that marks the largest building project in the history of the school. TTW engineers achieved major modifications to the existing structure – such as new intermediate mezzanine floors, raised roofs, and a number of structural post removals – while paying close attention to cost, simplicity, weight minimisation, and ease of buildability.
