Melbourne Girls Grammar School – Artemis Centre
South Yarra, VIC
The Artemis Centre is a modern and elegant new facility for Melbourne Girls Grammar that embodies the school’s commitment to student health and wellbeing. Engineering challenges were involved due to the site’s location within a complex environment of existing buildings, neighbouring residences, a heritage-listed chapel, and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
The building comprises three levels and uses multiple structural materials and methods, including hollowcore plank floors supported by deep precast beams and 25m span steel trusses; precast walls and steelwork roof; and steel stair stringers spanning 12m. An engineered pile and shotcrete retention system was utilised to minimise deflection in adjacent properties, and performance flooring was used in the basketball court and gymnasium to address vibration issues and requirements. Civil works included stormwater, overland flow and detention calculations, as well as level and pavement design for surrounds.
This world-class facility integrates a range of environments for holistic health, including: high-quality indoor pool, gymnasium, multi-purpose indoor courts, yoga/pilates studio, fitness hub, meeting areas, consultation rooms, and reflective spaces.
