Macquarie University Building E7A – Faculty of Science Offices

Macquarie Park, NSW

The refurbishment of one of the oldest buildings at Macquarie University involved transforming the existing structure to update the space and showcase a contemporary façade that revitalises the face of the building. The challenge was to achieve a graceful result in line with the University and the architect’s vision, while keeping a focus on buildability.

The E7A Building now comprises nine levels, with a four-level high glazed wall. The structure involves a custom-designed steel frame with structurally glazed unitized aluminium curtain wall panels. Particular attention was needed for the tight details at the joins between the new glass and steel structure and the existing concrete and brick building, to provide stability of the façade in a very smooth connection.

A glass atrium extension was also created between E7A and E7B to link the buildings and provide a sophisticated new space that now houses a café and meeting areas. Sustainability is also a feature of the building’s design – including the adaptive re-use of existing structures, and the utilisation of high-performance Low-E glazing.
