Cardinal Freeman Village – Stage 1 & 2

Cardinal Freeman Village – Stage 1 & 2

Ashfield, NSW

Cardinal Freeman Village is a large retirement complex undergoing redevelopment and new construction in a staged approach. Stages 1 and 2 have been completed, with Stage 1 delivering 55 independent living units over two blocks, and Stage 2 providing a building consisting of 40 units, offices, carpark, resident activity and communal areas, and a ground floor swimming pool. Stage 3 is currently in the design phase.

The construction of Stage 1 involved two new residential buildings that share a split-level basement, and the remodelling and upgrade of the Chapel undercroft space with a heritage façade that was extensively repaired to become a key feature and focal point. Stage 2 produced challenges for the engineering team due to the building’s relatively tight floor-to-floor height – requiring the utilisation of hanging walls and storey-deep transfer walls where traditional deep transfer beams could not be used.

With additional capacity to come in Stage 3, this new aged-care facility is a stylish development for Sydney’s inner west, and one that is already receiving industry accolades and awards.
