  • Abbotsleigh Sports Hall

The Abbotsleigh sports complex development comprised of the design of a new multi-purpose sports hall, elevated hockey field, fitness classrooms, tiered spectator seating, amenities and VIP viewing room. The multipurpose sports hall houses three sports courts in a column free 56m x 38m hall and is elevated, creating space for undercover parking, fitness classrooms, plant and storage spaces. In addition to the sports hall, an elevated sports field was constructed over a post-tensioned banded sub deck with additional car parking housed beneath.

The main architectural feature is the portal frames, seated on concrete plinths, that span 38 metres. The roof structure, made up of the frames, suites the architectural brief and generates rafter-column interaction. These details hide the pun bracing in the roof zone and eliminate diagonal fly bracing.

Complementing the main structures are a number of curved access walkways and feature stairs to suit circulation between the various areas on the undulating site. To connect the two areas, a link structure was cut into the batter slope which houses the support facility spaces.
